Ken Thaiday

Ken Thaiday was born on Erub (Darnley Island) off the northern tip of Queensland and moved to Cairns as a teenager where he became a founding member of the Darnley Island Dance Troupe. Thaidays' characteristic head dresses and hand held dance machines are highly prized by collectors and art institutions alike. Thaiday is also acknowledged as an inspirational figure to his people with his work attributed to a re-invigoration of cultural identity.

Brisbane Studio

NEWFlames - Brisbane 2003-2008 NEWflames artist in residency pilot program began in Brisbane during 2002 as a new initiative of Campfire Group and Fire-works Gallery. This program offered emerging and post-emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists with residencies and mentoring to experiment with new ways of thinking and working with their practice.

NEWflames Brisbane's program was supported by patron Ann Gamble Myer and managed by Michael Eather, Fire-works Gallery.

The following artists were awarded residencies during this period:

Tony Albert, Craig Koometta, Luke Cummins, Christine Christopherson, Jason Davidson, Andrea Fisher, Jenny Fraser, Roy McIvor, Marcia Murrungan, Archie Moore, Lily Campbell Napangardi, Bob Dixon Tjurpirulla, Janice Peacock Tjupurrula and Ian Waldron.
