Sharon Phineasa

Sharon Phineasa is an artist of Torres Strait Islander heritage. Sharon's practice is a reflection of cultural knowledge and experience, relating artistically to the creative feminine flair of the Torres Strait Island Woman by incorporating traditional and contemporary styles and designs. Sharon explains her practice as a form of storytelling, referencing the mythology of her infancy and upbringing "I want to tell my stories, I have countless enriching childhood experiences and many Island Myths and Legends to draw upon as the source of creating my work" says Sharon.

Brisbane Studio

NEWFlames - Brisbane 2003-2008 NEWflames artist in residency pilot program began in Brisbane during 2002 as a new initiative of Campfire Group and Fire-works Gallery. This program offered emerging and post-emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists with residencies and mentoring to experiment with new ways of thinking and working with their practice.

NEWflames Brisbane's program was supported by patron Ann Gamble Myer and managed by Michael Eather, Fire-works Gallery.

The following artists were awarded residencies during this period:

Tony Albert, Craig Koometta, Luke Cummins, Christine Christopherson, Jason Davidson, Andrea Fisher, Jenny Fraser, Roy McIvor, Marcia Murrungan, Archie Moore, Lily Campbell Napangardi, Bob Dixon Tjurpirulla, Janice Peacock Tjupurrula and Ian Waldron.
