Past Artists Profiles

Cairns Studio

NEWflames at Canopy Arts, Cairns August 2009 - July 2011.

The Cairns residency program was established to host residencies by emerging and post-emerging Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander artists. It provided artists with a valuable opportunity to work with new materials, develop professional skills, receive technical instruction, improve industry knowledge, gain exhibition experience and collaborate with Indigenous and Non-Indigenous artists.

The program was grounded in the notion of self determination. Artists were provided with freedom of expression, flexibility in structure and an opportunity for community involvement which is both unique and important.

This program has been supported by Ann Gamble Myer as the patron and President of NEWflames management committee, the Sidney Myer Foundation, Arts Queensland and private donors.
